Yoga: The Ideal Sport to Practise at Home

Yoga: The Ideal Sport to Practise at Home

What has attracted millions of devotees around the world to this practice is its ability to work out both the body and the mind (particularly by reducing stress and improving concentration). Do you feel like exploring this sport? That’s wonderful because yoga can be practised in the comfort of your own home! Here are our tips for getting a good start.

Inexpensive Equipment

What’s great about yoga is how little you have to spend on equipment. In fact, all you need is a mat and a towel (for sweat). A good quality mat can be purchased starting at $20. Clothing is equally not an issue: you don’t have to buy anything! Rummage through your closet for comfy clothes that won’t restrict your movements. Loose-fitting items are not recommended, though, as they can interfere with certain postures. You can also treat yourself to a special outfit designed for practising yoga.

Remove the Unnecessary

If you want to follow the “rules” of yoga to the letter, it is best to remove everything related to vanity during your sessions. Hair clips, earrings, makeup, perfume, watch … take it all off! A plain ponytail to tie back long hair is all that is needed. The idea is to get back to your original state.

A Zen Decor Away From Chaos

Ideally, yoga is practised far removed from distractions, especially noise, but also screens and hectic views like a busy street. Visual clutter is also to be avoided: the selected room should have a minimalist Zen decor. The most experienced yogis will tell you that they can concentrate in the midst of noise and confusion … but this generally requires a lot of practice!

Music, as Needed

If it is impossible for you to practise in a calm environment, you can simply put on your earphones and listen to relaxing music. Classical music or whale songs, for example (but nothing you might want to hum along to!).

In Front of a Mirror

In order to “connect” with your inner self, it is recommended that you practise yoga in front of a mirror, continuously looking yourself in the eyes. This will foster a meditative state of mind. It will also help you check the accuracy of your movements.

The Importance of Getting Your Body Ready

Although yoga is in principle easy on the joints and muscles, don’t be fooled by appearances! Before starting a session, it is best to warm up to avoid injury. This can be five minutes of stretching, a short jog on the spot or maybe a quick walk outside to get some fresh air.

How Many Times a Week?

Yoga does not require staunch discipline to be beneficial. A single weekly session can boost your energy and concentration levels. The more you practise, however, the better will be the results regarding muscle strength and mood. The state of mind you should aim for during your practice is one of emptiness and calm with slightly rapid breathing.

Tech Support!

A visual guide is essential when starting out to make sure you are correctly moving into postures. Many websites (free or paid) offer a range of yoga routines, for example: to reduce stress, for menstrual pain or to increase energy levels. My Virtual Yoga is a Quebec-based platform with many followers. A few effective smartphone or tablet applications are also available, such as Daily Yoga.

It is easy to start slowly by selecting beginner-level routines, and then move to more challenging ones. You can even practise with the whole family. We wish you an excellent introduction into the world of yoga!
