Integrating Into Your New Neighbourhood Is Not Rocket Science!

Integrating Into Your New Neighbourhood Is Not Rocket Science!

It is always fun to build a friendly rapport with our neighbours. Moving into a new area is an ideal time to forge new relationships. Here are a few suggestions for starting this new life off on the right foot.

Some of our ideas will seem obvious, but they are often seldom used by new neighbours. Why not be the first in the neighbourhood to do so?

Introducing Yourself Is Not Old-Fashioned

It may seem old-fashioned to ring a neighbour’s doorbell, introduce yourself and gift them a homemade cake; however, such considerate actions are very much appreciated by people when a new person moves into their community. Of course, you don’t have to spend hours tied to the stove if you don’t have much time. Just bring your smile and everything will go perfectly well. It’s the human connection that matters!

Are You Shy?

If feeling shy and awkward is stopping you from going through with official introductions, you can demonstrate your openness to meeting your neighbours by sitting on your front porch and smiling to the residents who pass by. A nod or a wave of the hand is also appropriate. Who knows, maybe one of them will come over for a quick chat!

Organize a Housewarming Party

There is nothing like a party to quickly become a member of a community. It could be a summer BBQ or an informal corn roast. You don’t have to turn it into a big production; all your guests will appreciate your efforts. Some of them may not ever be aware of how closely they live to each other. This might be the start of a more close-knit neighbourhood, all thanks to you!

Use the Kids? Brilliant!

The street is quiet and your children are playing out there with the neighbourhood kids? This is the perfect occasion to connect with the other parents. Go outside to watch your youngsters and chat up the other adults present. You can also use this technique when picking up your little ones from school or daycare.

Familiarize Yourself With the Local Businesses

Whether you live in a big city or a village, there are without a doubt local shops and restaurants that are ideal for meeting new friends. It might be with the business owner or the regulars, happy to see a new face. By going there regularly, you will no doubt quickly become one of the gang.

Is There a Green Alley?

There are more and more green alleys popping up in urban areas. These are small pedestrian streets that have been converted by and for residents. It may comprise of a community garden, places to sit and enjoy the sunshine and green walls on adjacent buildings. Sometimes, neighbourhood parties are held there. Find out if there is such a street near your home!

Keep Your Pets in Check

Everybody has their own tolerance threshold for noise. You may not be easily bothered by sounds in the area, but others are more susceptible to becoming irritated. To avoid any conflict with your new neighbours, make sure your dogs don’t bark every time someone walks by or, equally, that your cats don’t “do their business” on other people’s lawns.

Yes to Music, But Sparingly

Along the same lines, hearing the same country songs over and over again from a neighbouring yard may not bother you, but for others, having to endure someone else’s taste in music is exasperating. Respectful neighbours keep the volume low. Decibels can go up during a party, but must come down after 11 p.m. Psst! It is always best to warn residents when you are planning a boisterous party. If not, don’t be surprised when they call the police with a noise complaint.

When to Carry Out Noisy Tasks

The lawnmower, jigsaw and edge trimmer are useful tools, but can be deafening! Especially while trying to relax in the yard or on the balcony. There are no bylaws restricting when such chores may be carried out, but be aware that there are unwritten rules designed to keep the peace. To integrate well, it is best to avoid making a racket on Sundays. On weekdays or during the weekend, it is recommended to wait until after 10 a.m. to take out the tools and to put them away by 7 p.m.

Imagine if everyone took this advice. Living together would not doubt be more pleasant no matter the area. Have fun meeting your neighbours!
