Small Room? Small Home? Open the Space Up with See-Through Decor!

Small Room? Small Home? Open the Space Up with See-Through Decor!

Use furniture and accessories made of transparent materials to give the illusion that your home’s rooms are bigger than they really are.

Because they allow light to pass through and do not visually dominate the space, these interior design elements can completely change the look of your home! Plus, by taking some care in choosing the right style, they will fit harmoniously into your decor.

Transparent Chairs

Some types of chairs can look imposing and dominate a room. Especially if they are as broad as the type often found in an office! In small rooms, see-through models are the way to go. These chairs will give the impression that there is a lot of room to move around in. They can be found in various styles, even in elegant shapes that perfectly complement a contemporary or classical interior decor. Others are suitable for a rustic ambiance. They’re great in the dining room, office or entrance. Place them wherever you choose!

An Airy Living Room

Living rooms are often busy spaces that easily become cluttered with items such as entertainment devices, remote controls, tech, homework or magazines. A great way of lightening up the look of the room is to add a glass coffee table or a transparent low-rise television stand or console. Need additional practical surfaces to place your belongings? Buy one or more small translucent polycarbonate plastic side tables.

Top Tip for Tiny Bathrooms

Houses rarely have grandiose bathrooms; usually, space is limited and each of this room’s components compete over every available centimetre. One tip for a fresh and airy tub with shower is to get a clear curtain or a fixed half-wall door. If you are renovating, replace your bathtub with a tiled shower stall and glass door — your room will look that much bigger!

Lighting Fixtures That Are Almost Invisible

Table lamps, floor lamps, chandeliers, wall sconces … multiple light sources are precious allies when it comes to creating the right atmosphere in a home; but when space is tight, you have to be careful not to overload the decor. For example, a solid wood chandelier will probably give the room an enclosed feel, so focus on delicate light fixtures with thin poles, glass shades or uncovered bulbs.

“Floating” Furniture

Furniture that appears to be floating in a room makes it feel more spacious, which is why hanging (wall-mounted) furniture is ideal in small rooms. Alternatively, choose furniture with clear legs that will seamlessly disappear like a wooden kitchen table resting on a glass base, for example.

“Empty” Accessories

There’s something even more transparent than polycarbonate plastic and glass: empty space! Over the past few years, furnishings, light fixtures and decorative objects that are finely structured and feature empty spaces have become increasingly popular. Their shapes — often geometrically inspired — allow you to create fresh and open-looking rooms. These interior design elements are particularly suited for rooms decorated in the southwestern, bohemian and contemporary styles.

When to Opt for the Solid Look

But transparency is not always the way to go if you want to visually light up a space, especially in small homes. For example, kitchen cabinets with glass doors that reveal clutter will have the opposite effect. Keep in mind that see-through should not mean to see everything.

Besides the use of transparent materials, what other tips and trick will you come up with to create a more spacious-looking home?
