7 Home Decor Trends that Are Definitely on the Out!

When renovating one or more rooms in our home, we generally hope that the new look will stay fresh for several years. That is why it is best to steer clear of those home decor trends whose popularity is in decline.

In the world of design, a trend has a lifespan of between 5 to 15 years. At the beginning it is on the rise and only the boldest adopt it. Later it reaches a plateau of widespread popularity until it runs out of steam. Here are some of the styles that have begun to fall out of favour this year and that may well be out of date in the near future!

1— Two-Toned Kitchen Cabinets

Two-toned kitchen cabinets — with the top cupboards in white and the bottom cabinets in natural wood, for example — have been around for a decade now. However, according to a number of designers, the look won't be around much longer.

2— High Gloss

No matter the colour or type of furnishing – whether it be kitchen cabinets made of thermoplastic (or an imitation of it), glossy TV consoles or highly polished office furniture – shiny finishes should be avoided if you want a fashionable room. Focus on raw and matte materials.

3— Imposing Countertops and Sinks

The kitchens in houses built a decade ago mostly have bulky sinks (which rise up a few centimetres above the counter) and counters that are several inches thick. Be aware that this is no longer considered trendy! It is best to turn to thin, discreet countertops and sinks.

4— Wall-Mounted Furniture

A common strategy to improve traffic flow or make a small room look bigger is to attach the furniture to the walls, such as the bathroom’s sink and vanity or the living room’s entertainment console. But it seems that we will be abandoning this trick in upcoming years! Instead, choose corner furniture on legs (preferably of natural wood). It is a less streamlined style … and that’s exactly what you want!

5— Minimalist Decor

Airy and open houses that are easy to move around in and where there is no visual clutter will always be desirable. However, in terms of interior decoration, the minimalist trend is gradually being abandoned. What is increasingly popular are furnishings featuring bright patterns and different fabric texture combinations. Moreover, don’t be afraid of displaying an array of decor accessories on your counters, shelves and tables. Darker, richer colour schemes are also a great option for moving away from the neutral minimalist look.

6— Straight Lines

If undulating contours are on the rise, then straight lines must be on their way out. Already, dressers are becoming curvier, sectionals more voluminous and decorative objects — like stools, ottomans and mirrors — more spherical. Soon, there won’t be a square edge to be found in our homes!

7— Interior Stone Walls

While textured walls (3D panels, velvet wallpaper, etc.) continue to be in style, natural stone is less so. For an on-trend fireplace, choose a surround in a concrete finish or matte ceramic tiles.

Home decor and design trends are constantly changing to the extent that you might feel like it is impossible to keep the look of your rooms current. That’s why sometimes it’s best to follow your own personal tastes. After all, it’s important that you feel at home in your own house!
