7 Tips for Creating the Perfect Reading Nook This Fall

Admit it! Cooling temperature and darkening evenings mean that all you want to do at the end of the day is to snuggle up by the fire. So, wouldn’t a comfy little corner for yourself be lovely.

Here are some ideas to turn what you have in mind into reality. Hint! Some these items are indispensable!

Where to Set Up Your Reading Nook

Anywhere! In the bedroom, under the staircase, inside a window seat, in a corner of the basement, in the sunroom, etc. The important thing is to have enough room to place a comfortable seat as well as some practical and decorative objects.

Create a Cohesive Whole

You will always achieve a successful decor scheme by following the “rule of three,” which consists in combining three elements of different proportions to form a whole. For example, bring together a large adult-sized pouffe, a small rug and a tall floor lamp as your foundation. Then have fun adding accessories.

Don’t Forget the Softness

Reading nooks are synonymous with coziness! Indeed, shouldn’t comfort be your main objective. Especially since this space probably won’t only be used for reading: it will also be the ideal spot to take a nap! So pile on soft, plushy items such as throws, rugs and cushions.

Need Privacy?

A reading nook should be a place you can escape to and temporarily hideaway from the world in. A bubble-type hanging chair is the perfect option for seclusion thanks to its wide sides. Other ways of adding privacy are a decorative screen, a tall plant or a bookshelf. Useful and beautiful!

Soft Lighting

When reading in the evenings, you must have adequate lighting to avoid eye strain. When designing your space, include a suspended lighting fixture, floor lamp or table lamp. And for a more romantic ambiance arrange some candles on a side table.

Add a Stable Surface

You will also need somewhere to put your French coffee bowl, reading glasses and books, of course. Without a stable surface, the reading nook will be incomplete! A small side table, solid ottoman or wall-mounted shelf will do just that.

Enough Storage

The secret to a clutter-free home is to have enough storage space. To avoid any untidiness, consider incorporating some storage options into your reading area for your books, magazines, thick wool socks and warm sweater, so you always have them on hand on those chilly days. Consider a lovely deep wicker basket, a wooden box attached to the wall or left on the floor, or a bookshelf that you can fill with your favourite novels.

We hope your reading nook will bring you a lot of happiness. We are certain it will quickly become your favourite place to retreat and relax when at home!
