Green Alleys: Little Known Allies

Green Alleys: Little Known Allies

In many large urban areas, here and elsewhere, green alleys are becoming increasingly common. This is not surprising as they offer far more benefits than simply improving the environment. See how!

The City of Montreal implemented the Opération Tournesol program in 1980 with the demolition of 35,000 unused sheds. The primary objective was to prevent fires. It led, however, to much more: the sun was finally able to shine down into a number of alleys that had been permanently shaded over by the many cumbersome buildings. The city government of Montreal then enthusiastically decided to bring down even more abandoned sheds. All that was left to do was to bring nature back into all these alleys!

All Kinds!

Around the world, there are various types of green alleys. In most cities, as in Montreal, green alleys are foremost living spaces harmoniously shared by both nature and humans. They can contain vegetable plots, flower gardens, green walls, green roofs, picnic tables or even hammocks. All the neighbours can take advantage of these areas.

Environmental Benefits

There are approximately 325 green alleys in Montreal; this number represents 15% of all the alleys in the city. The borough containing the most is Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie, followed by Plateau Mont-Royal. They have significantly improved the environment thanks to the transformation of carbon dioxide into oxygen by the plants living there. Those containing green walls are far more comfortable because of their lower humidity levels. Green alleys are also ideal spaces for biodiversity, especially for insects that – we must remember – are essential to the health of the planet.

Goodbye, Heat Island Effect!

All that asphalt and concrete can cause suffocating temperatures inside the city. Certain urban zones, where there is little shade and greenery, become heat islands, i.e., zones where the temperature can be up to ten degrees Celsius higher. To combat this heat, the plants in these green alleys are an ideal solution.

Improving Mental and Physical Well-Being

According to several studies, living in proximity to nature, close to plants, contributes to our well-being. Greenery reduces stress. One could even say that for many city residents, these green alleys have antidepressant effects. However, there are not only psychological advantages; the body also benefits thanks to breathing cleaner air, eating the vegetables grown there, and having a place to relax far from the concrete. These are great ways to improve physical health.

Learning to Share

One of the most significant returns of green alleys is the building of stronger relationships between neighbours. By coming together in this living space, residents become a supportive community. This helps many break through their isolation. The borough of Rosemont-Petite-Patrie is well aware of this fact. A few years ago, when a handful neighbours decided to transform their alleys, they brought their neighbourhood back to life: artistic performances, block parties, storytelling activities for children, the sharing of knowledge and goods. Over the past months, projects and the exchange of services have become regular events. Neighbours have even implemented Project Celsius to experiment with geothermal systems buried in an alley. The residents will then be able to use the green energy generated.

A Boon for the Economy

Montreal and the city’s Éco-Quartiers (local greening councils) are so proud of their many revitalized alleys that they have set up walking routes through their green alleys and parks. Quebecers and tourists have been able to enjoy them for several years. Four walks of at least ten kilometres have been created to help visitors discover Montreal’s neighbourhoods.

How to Green Your Alley

Do you live near a gloomy alley and would like to give it a new lease on life? It is possible! Find out more at your local Éco-Quartier. They will provide you with all the information you need. Be aware, however, that this is a collective project: you must convince at least some of your neighbours to join the party for it to happen. Together you will form a management committee that will oversee the planning and maintenance of the alley as well as what activities will be held there.

All cities can benefit from creating green alleys. Join this ecological and social movement!
