Trees and Shrubs: Which One to Choose for a Small Yard

Trees and Shrubs: Which One to Choose for a Small Yard

Trees are the centre pieces of any backyard as they provide shade, a home for birds and convert carbon dioxide into oxygen. But what to do if the yard is tiny? RE/MAX has made a list of trees and shrubs that you can grow in Quebec and that are ideal for smaller spaces.

Smoke Tree: Make It Glow

This shrub rarely grows beyond 2.5 metres high and wide. It is quite dashing in a mixed border, but can equally stand on its own in a corner of the garden. It will immediately catch everyone’s attention thanks to its textured flowers (like powder puffs!). The smoke tree prefers to be planted in a sunny area with water-retaining rich loamy soil, but will manage in stony and dry ground.

Flowering Almond (or prunus tribola multiplex): so cute!

When it has reached maturity, the flowering almond will not exceed 3 metres in height and 2 metres in width. It is beloved for its compact size and flamboyant look, but most especially for its ability to blend into a Zen decor. This shrub features lovely pale pink flowers that require a lot of sun for optimal blooming; therefore, avoid planting it a shaded corner. Pick a spot that is also sheltered from the wind so that it can make it through the winter.

Psst! Did you know that the main difference between a tree and a shrub is not its size, but the shape of its trunk? A tree has a single trunk while a shrub has several, often ramous, branches growing from the base.

Crab Apple: The Preferred Choice of Birds

With an average adult size of 5 metres high and 4 metres wide, the crab apple will shelter you from the sun on hot days. In the spring, the green leaves are followed by white flowers. Next, the small fruits appear, much to the delight of birds who will gobble them up. Another advantage: this tree is very resistant to disease and urban pollution.

Japanese Tree Lilac: For a Clean Look

This tree, which can grow up to 7 metres but will not exceed 6 metres in width, is lush and majestic. You can simply prune back the lower branches to free the space at its base. It is easily identified thanks to its sweetly perfumed flowers. The creamy-white balls appear around the end of June and are perfect in any backyard decor, whether it is in the cottage garden style or in a more contemporary look. Plus, the Japanese tree lilac is an ideal landing pad for butterflies. It is therefore not surprising that so many homeowners in Quebec have planted one!

Japanese Maple: Give It Some Wow!

Although it is considered a shrub, the Japanese maple can reach a height of 6 metres and a width of 4.5 metres. When they bloom, its bright red flowers make it a breathtaking plant. The growth then turns a deeper shade. Be aware that Japanese maples grow slowly and prefer to be kept away from direct sunlight and intense heat. It will be happiest in a shady spot. It does, however, resist well to freezing temperatures.
