What Is the Future of Home Appliances?

Technology is evolving at breakneck speeds! This is just as true for home appliances, with the aim of making our lives easier. What type of appliances will live in our homes in the coming years?

During the most recent IFA Berlin trade show, the entire world discovered what the year 2050 has in store for us when it comes to home appliances. Creators have based their prototypes on the future needs of humans. And the results are awe-inspiring! Let’s take a closer look at these impressive machines, all engineered with the environment in mind.

How Will We Wash the Dishes?

According to scientists, in 2050 74% of the global population will live in cities. For this reason, apartments will keep getting smaller and smaller so that everyone can have access to housing. The New Zealand manufacturer Fisher & Paykel has designed a dishwasher with two large independent drawers that in every way look like regular drawers. It therefore takes up less space and is easier to integrate into the decor. It is also worth noting that it is highly energy efficient and uses very little water.

How Will We Cook Our Food?

It may be that instead of using stovetop burners to cook our food, we will heat our pots through induction by sticking moveable objects to them. The energy will be generated by sugar crystals transformed into heat. Another technology that may appear in our homes sooner than we think is a smart cooking table that will, will the help of the screen, guide the user in choosing the right temperature for the food. Miele is a company preparing to market a stove that will perfectly cook items 70% faster through electromagnetic waves.

Where Will We Store Our Food?

Some leading thinkers believe that refrigerators may move outside the home to maximize the use of space. Fixed to the exterior walls, they will use the cold air in winter to preserve food and, in the summer, transform the sun’s rays to say cool (see photo). Another creator has designed a fridge (for inside the home in this case!) made of five independent compartments that can be set to each food’s ideal temperature. Food will therefore last longer. A technology called Antioxidant Zone will also prevent oxidation. A further innovation is a biopolymer gel for use in doorless and motorless refrigerators. This small appliance will keep food cool with luminescence.

How Will We Clean Our Clothes?

The giant Samsung could launch a washer offering high-performance despite its small size. Called Quick Drive, this home appliance will utilize a unique technology: a contra-rotating drum paddle. The result is a doubly fast wash! Additionally, its mini format means that we will be able to carry it everywhere and use it as a dirty laundry basket. We might also own self-cleaning closets: thanks to molecular technology, dirt and odours will disappear as soon as we put our clothes away.

How Will We Eliminate Dust?

Vacuum cleaners are getting smarter. Like robots, they will have the ability to analyze different types of surfaces for ideal suction. For example, Electrolux has recently launched the PURE i9 that, with its triangular shape, does not cut corners. It has a 3D detection system, helping it avoid obstacles and adapt to various thicknesses and inclines. You will be able to let run around the house while you relax! But be warned, it’s not cheap (almost $1000)!

Multi-Use Tablets

One of the most impressive category of prototypes presented is without a doubt multi-use tablets. With a very contemporary look, they can be hung on the wall and complement the decor. This is not, however, their only purpose. When required, they can transform into a heating element, refrigerator, air conditioner or light source. All with little energy consumption. Brilliant!

These home appliances from the future are far beyond what we might imagine! And we can’t wait to welcome them into our homes; unfortunately, for most of them, we will have to be patient!
